about my story

My professional trajectory

With over 30 years of sailing experience and 17 years serving as a captain, I have built my career through continuous training, exploration of challenging waters, and an unwavering passion for the sea.

1993 - 1998

EARLY LIFE AND FIRST MEMORIES

At home, there was always a close connection with sailboats, which were my father's greatest passion. From a very young age, I accompanied him along the docks, inspecting boats and sailing.

In the 1980s, my father ran a shipyard with a partner, where they built nearly 125 vessels, including a 27.5-foot racing sailboat that he both designed and crafted.

1998 - 2000

EARLY NAUTICAL EXPERIENCE

When I was five years old, we brought that sailboat together down south. I remember the preparations in my grandfather's Nissan Patrol Jeep and the three-day trip from Santiago to Chiloé.

Vacations in Chiloé (1997–1998): My father raced a couple of regattas on that sailboat. My mother, sisters, and I would accompany him, staying at a friend of my father's house.

1999-2002

DISCOVERING MECHANICS

Thanks to my grandfather, who owned buses and lived next door, I developed an interest in engines and mechanical parts.

My first personal project began at age nine, when I discovered a motorcycle that my father and his brother had built in the countryside. I decided to restore it together with my maternal grandfather.

2001 - 2007

LAKUTAIA SAILBOAT PROJECT

During a vacation in Dalcahue (2001), we identified two boat hulls built by my father in the 1980s, originally designed for fish transport.

* Auction and Acquisition (2003): While we were on vacation in Spain, my uncles successfully secured one of the vessels through a public auction.

* Sailboat Conversion Project: At age 12, we initiated the project to convert the hull into the sailboat LAKUTAIA, executing construction and refurbishment over multiple summer seasons in Chiloé.

* Systems Engineering: At 13, I conducted a comprehensive study of 12-volt mechanical systems, marine engineering, and transmission mechanics to design and manufacture the vessel's mechanical and electrical systems.

* Engine Integration: We procured a Mercedes diesel engine sourced from a decommissioned bus and adapted it for marine use, including installation of a transmission system salvaged from a Chilean Navy sailboat.

2006 - 2008

NAUTICAL EDUCATION AND EARLY NAVIGATIONS

First Navigation on LAKUTAIA (2007):
During Easter Week, we launched the boat and completed a night navigation with the mast laid down on deck.

Coastal Captain Course:
At 16 years old, I completed a seven-month course to obtain my Coastal Recreational Captain License, which was officially issued to me upon turning 17 in January 2008.

2009 - 2015

YOUTH AND NEW PROJECTS

Establishment of WESTERN PATAGONIA (2009): At the age of 18, I made the decision to begin expeditions aboard the family vessel, catering to passengers and tourists. This led to the formal establishment of the commercial enterprise and the execution of inaugural voyages in January 2010.

First Scientific Expedition (2016): Conducted an expedition aimed at tagging blue whales and performing oceanographic measurements utilizing advanced, state-of-the-art equipment.
